The 50th Anniversary of Candy Apple Red Paint…the stuff of songs and LEGENDS!
It is not every day that an automotive paint inspires the Beach Boys to write a song! Roughly remembered, it’s something like…Santa Claus was driving in a Candy Apple Red Sleigh….
Candy Apple Red paint was developed by Joe Bailon of Northern California, fifty years ago. An accident it was, as this incredibly talented car customizer experimented with pigment combinations.
A gift it was for the rest of the automotive and motorcycle industry (and for sleigh makers too!).
To honor “Candy Apple Red” Joe Bailon for his gift to the industry and the Legends that built SEMA to be what it is today, Buffalo Milke Automotive Polishing Products, Inc.® of Northern California is hosting a Celebration Honoring “Candy Apple Red” Joe Bailon on Wednesday, November 1, 2006 at 2 PM, Booth 12916, NORTH HALL.
Meet Legend Joe Bailon and hear him recount the moment of discovery of Candy Apple Red Paint. He also has stories to tell about the custom jobs for Hollywood’s “A” List like James Garner, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Sammy Davis Jr., etc. Also one of the most famous cars ever built was Miss Elegance which he did, winning multiple national awards.
To celebrate this historical moment, a multitude of other Legends will reminisce as well, acknowledging how Joe has been a “Johnny Appleseed” in his planting of inspirational and charitable contributions (apple seeds) throughout the world.
Darryl Starbird, the curator of the world renowned National Hot Rod and Custom Car Hall of Fame and Museum in Afton, Oklahoma and is, in his own right, the Legendary, highly respected custom car designer revered for his “bubble top” creations, says that “Joe Bailon is my hero.”
International customizer/designer John D’Agostino of Discovery Bay, California has been inspired to paint several of his cars Candy Apple Red, including the Starfire, a ’57 Cadillac which became one of the Mattel Hot Wheels in the Legends Series. Legend John D’Agostino recalls “As a kid, 7 years old, I was reading about Joe Bailon, and now I can proudly say that we have been friends for several decades.” In fact, when John’s career began, Joe Bailon gave John in 1985 the Candy Apple Red paint for his Royal Tahitian that was featured in many magazines, such as Street Rodder, and Rod & Custom.
Legend Blackie Gejeian, of the prestigious, invitational-only Fresno Autorama in Central California (which is celebrating its 48th Anniversary in 2007), recalls his friendship of over 60 years with Joe. He remembers when Joe got started in the 1940’s! Blackie reminisces “Candy Apple Red inspired kids and adults alike! Folks love it!”
The Monet of custom car painters and Legend, Art Himsl of Concord, California states
“I have seen many a car roll out of my shop over the years sporting that special Candy Apple Red sparkle!”
And Legendary Bones (Jim Noteboom in Southern California), who showed his extraordinary ’39, four door Woody, the “Zef-Fire” at SEMA recently, said that his love for Candy Apple Red goes way back to High School in 1955 and '56 when his buddy Larry Watson would get his Candy Apple Red paint from Joe Bailon.
And Gene Winfield, the world renowned customizer and Legend will reminisce as well.
And famous rides from our and Joe’s history will be there. Darryl Starbird is bringing his own custom from the National Hall of Fame and Museum, The Cristina. And one of Joe Bailon’s most famous Candy Apple Red customs which he built, The Widow, will be featured, courtesy of Dan Weaver of Spokane, Washington.
One man has made a huge contribution to SEMA, to the evolution of the industry for customizing rides, and inspired many a little boy…..
Celebrate the human side of this business. Come to the Buffalo Milke® Booth and say in person “Thank You, Joe! Thanks for making a difference!...a beautiful difference!”
